9 Tips for Photographing Your Bump during Pregnancy

Maternity Photo

We’ve received so many beautiful bump pictures as part of our #NNStories Pregnancy Announcement campaign that we started thinking about importance of maternity photography. Photographing your baby bump is a fun and special part of pregnancy - whether you use the pictures to announce your pregnancy, to display them in your baby shower invite, or to have a beautiful memento from a very special 9 months of your life. But let’s be honest - despite the maternity photos of famous actors and models like Demi Moore and Giselle Bundchen might suggest - capturing the natural beauty of pregnancy and bump isn’t always easy, so here are some helpful tips for creating the perfect baby bump picture!

1) Make yourself comfortable: It’s so important to capture this special time in your life in a natural and comfortable way. Feel free to have other family members join in the shoot and wear something that you makes you feel beautiful.

2) Pick your most photogenic month: Maternity photographers often recommend scheduling a baby bump shoot around 28-32 weeks of pregnancy. This is when your belly is prominently showing (no longer to be mistaken as a beer gut!) and before you’ve become overly uncomfortable, which can often happen towards the latter stages of the pregnancy.

3) Don’t be afraid to use your hands: Touching or holding your bump with you or your husband’s hands helps accent the bump and create an intimate connection with your baby.

4) Take advantage of natural lighting: Plan your photos around taking advantage of natural light. As opposed to artificial lighting and a flash, natural light can help to accent the natural shadows and highlights of your more curvaceous body.

5) Show it off: Try and wear something form-fitting and revealing if you aren’t planning on showing any skin. This will help accentuate the bump and show off your curves in the best way possible

6) Experiment with angles: The typical side torso shot is great, but feel free to get creative! Try other views of your bump, such as a 3/4 angle or shooting from the front down. Try shots standing up and sitting down as well.

7) Pamper yourself with hairstyling and makeup: Your hair and makeup are great ways to accent your look. Take advantage of this fun event to pamper yourself by hiring someone to do your hair and makeup for the day of.

8) Keep the spotlight on you: Posing in front of a solid wall or clean backdrop. Avoid any background clutter that might detract from keeping the spotlight on you!

9) And most importantly…have fun!: Get creative with your shoot and use experiences from your pregnancy to inspire you. The key is to enjoy the experience while tastefully capturing a memorable moment.

Happy photo session and don’t forget to submit your bump/pregnancy announcement to Nine Naturals for our pregnancy announcement series #NNStories! Follow us on Facebook to see how others announced their pregnancies!

Planning for the Unexpected: All You Need To Know About Organizing Important Documents

organizing paperwork

Article is courtesy of Everplans.com

If there is one thing that almost all parents and parents-to-be have in common is that they are always planning and preparing for the next step - but what happens when the unexpected happens? That is why Nine Naturals is excited to partner with Everplans in the Planning For The Unexpected Series to help bring you helpful tips and information for everything from financial and medical planning to spiritual and grief counseling.

Have you ever watched a show about hoarders? Even though the gross stuff is the most compelling, hoarding doesn’t only apply to furniture, expired food and doll collections. It’s also about paperwork. The stuff you throw in drawers and boxes in case you need it. The stuff you never really get around to sorting because you’ve got more pressing things going on in your life.

If you’re not especially excited about tackling those boxes imagine someone else having to do it for you? Someone who doesn’t understand what’s important and what needs to be shredded or recycled?

We all save lots of paper and digital files because it’s better to have something than to need it. You never know when you might require that gas station receipt or old pay stub or quarterly investment report. But imagine the stress your kid, spouse or best friend would feel while digging through boxes or filing cabinets to understand and settle all your financial issues?

Our endgame is simple: Make all the paperwork in your life manageable so you don’t overwhelm the people you leave behind. When it comes time to settle your estate, pay required taxes, and quickly and easily receive benefits they’ll be able to do it all without wanting to resurrect your corpse with the sole purpose of murdering you.

Places You Should Start

Types of paperwork you should gather and put in an easy-to-find folder:

  • Estate Planning: Will, trusts, power of attorney, etc…
  • Medical: advance directive, living will, DNR, DNH,
  • Financial and Legal Accounts: insurance policies, bank accounts, credit cards, tax returns, mortgage info, deeds
  • Personal Information: birth certificate, Social Security card, marriage license, divorce decree
  • Professional Contacts: lawyer, accountant, insurance agent, etc..
  • Utilities and Services: Power company, phone/internet/TV provider, cleaning services, electrician, plumber, etc…

Let’s Get Digital: Organizing Passwords

Gather password information for all of your online accounts-email, online banking and finance, social media-as well as for physical items-banking PIN number, computer, cell phone, safe deposit boxes, and combinations to locks or safes.

We understand this is incredibly sensitive information so store these items somewhere safe, and tell someone you trust of the location. This includes family or an attorney, who can securely store these items for you.

Don’t store these items in a safe deposit box, as the bank may require a court order to allow your family to open the box, which will often take more time that you’d like.

You can also securely store your important information, documents, and account info online, with services such as Personal.com.

Why This Is Important

After a death, your family has to deal with lots of financial and administrative tasks that can quickly become overwhelming. They can spend months digging through drawers and file cabinets and waiting for new statements and bills to arrive just so they can figure out what’s going on. Even then, they might not uncover everything.

With some planning and organization you can relieve a big chunk of that burden by helping your family easily settle your estate, pay required taxes, and quickly receive the benefits they need.

The low-down on all the stuff your family needs to do:

  • Apply for and claim benefits
  • Get through the probate process
  • Close bank accounts
  • Pay any final estate or income taxes
  • For a full run-down of everything so you don’t leave anything out, use our resource [Checklist: Documents to Organize and Share] or jump right into your Everplan where you can actually get it done right now.

Need More Reasons? Here You Go!

  • Avoid unnecessary charges from ongoing subscriptions
  • Protection from identity theft or fraud
  • Distribute, sell, or donate any personal items that weren’t included in the Will
  • This is also beneficial while you’re alive too. It can help you budget more effectively and get a complete, real-time financial sense of where you are.

Hope we gave you enough reasons. If you have any more, or have specific experiences with how organized paperwork helped you through a tough situation, please share them with us. Our goal is to do everything possible to make this easier so you can get on with enjoying life.

What’s in Your Antiperspirant? The Risks of Aluminum Compounds during Pregnancy

aluminum free deodorant natural deodorant

What are aluminum compounds?

Aluminum is the third most abundant element on earth and the primary component of the earth’s crust. In other words, it’s everywhere, including in various cosmetics, medicines, foods and packaging materials. Aluminum is pretty much always found as a compound in personal care products - in particular in antiperspirants. The most commonly used antiperspirant compounds are aluminum chlorohydrates and aluminum zirconium variations.

What are they doing in antiperspirants?

Aluminum compounds are the active components in antiperspirant that prevent sweating and all the FDA approved antiperspirants contain aluminum in one form or another. Note that deodorants and antiperspirants are not the same. While deodorant deals with body odor, antiperspirants specifically target sweating. This means you can prevent body odor without being exposed to aluminum by choosing a pure deodorant with no added antiperspirant – like the new Nine Naturals pregnancy safe deodorant.

What’s the risk associated with aluminum?

It’s especially important to be cautious of high aluminum exposures during pregnancy. A number of studies have been published showing potential developmental defects in animals. These include overall development as well as behavioral and neurological issues.

There have also been a number of studies potentially tying aluminum exposure to neurodegenerative diseases and breast cancer. In particular, antiperspirant has been implicated on the basis that aluminum can be absorbed from through the skin with daily use leading to significantly higher levels of exposure.

At high levels aluminum is certainly a toxin[i]. Fortunately though, when we eat it very little is absorbed through the digestive system so our exposure from consumed aluminum is quite low even though the average adult ingests 7-9 mg of aluminum per day[ii]. In the case of absorption through the skin, any aluminum taken up would have a more direct route to the bloodstream hence the greater concern about this method of exposure. Generally speaking, the main risk from aluminum is for pregnant women and for adults with pre-existing renal conditions and in those cases limiting exposure is advised.

What can you do to limit aluminum exposure?

Choosing aluminum-free products is the best place to start! Note that natural does not mean aluminum-free, but at Nine Naturals it does: our natural deodorant is aluminum-free. We use non-nano zinc oxide, which is pregnancy-safe and effective.

DIY: Miffy Wall Art

Article & Photo Courtesy of Well Rounded NY.

Shop Sweet Things founder Jeanne Chan dresses up our nursery walls with everyone’s favorite bunny. Hello everyone, this is Jeanne Chan from Shop Sweet Things.

I’m sure if you’re a parent, you’re familiar with Miffy (soon-to-be parents: get comfy). My girls and I love that little bunny, and so I decided to create a wall art on it. It’s super easy and it took me about 15 minutes to make!

Here’s what you’ll need:
Duct Tape
Canvas (9 x 12)
Scissors
White Poster Board

Step 1: Draw and cut out bunny ears. I made mine to be about 8 inches long.

miffy wall art 2

Step 2: Cut out color duct tape for the inside of ears and then circles for the cheeks. Cut out small circles for the eyes and two small strips for the mouth.

miffy wall art 3

Step 3: Tape the bunny ears to the back of the canvas.

Processed with VSCOcam

Step 4: Stick on the rest like the example here. It’s ok if it’s not perfect. Since it’s on canvas, you can always peel it off and rearrange. Also, I really like the rough cut of these shapes, so no worries about making perfect circles and bunny ears. I think it brings out the fun and quirkiness of this art.

And there you have it: a cute DIY Miffy wall art for the littles. Hope you enjoy!

21Bundles: Natural Products At Your Door + 25% Your First Bundle!

21Bundles Featured on Nine NaturalsAs a new mom or mom-to-be, it can be real challenge knowing what products work the best and are safe for you and your baby. Enter 21Bundles, a monthly subscription box service that all delivers a bundle filled with full size all natural products to your door, tailored to your specific month of pregnancy or new baby’s life. We can’t imagine an easier way for moms to try new products that are safe for the whole family, but also pamper themselves with a box full of goodies each month! This week, Nine Naturals sat down with Jacqueline Cerone Cardamone, founder of 21Bundles:

NN: Tell us the 21bundles story! What lead to the creation of the Company & what are the 21bundles?

JK: I have been caring for children since I was a child myself. My sister Emily said something in reference to herself once that really resonated with me: “You know how some people just cannot walk past a dog without wanting to pet it? I feel that way about babies.” I, too, cannot walk past a baby without “oo”ing and “ah”ing (if petting wouldn’t alarm mothers, I would surely do just that). It was through work as a mother’s helper (age 10), babysitter, nanny, CLEC, and postpartum doula that my respect for mothers deepened.

I love dads too, but it’s the mamas with whom I work closely. I watch mothers do the toughest and most important job – raising children, and I have always had a desire to lend two helping hands. More recently, mothers that I work with as a postpartum doula were asking me to recommend natural products, and the endless amount of research I have done on the topic started to come in handy. As interest from my clients increased and I read more about the toxins that litter our every day products, I realized I needed to do something to make a difference at scale, which is what led to the birth of 21Bundles.

NN: In your own words, why are natural products so important for the health of pregnant women & babies?

Less than 20 percent of all childhood cancers are due to genetic predisposition, while a high percentage of them are linked to environmental exposures. It’s not only the exposures children have post-birth, but maternal exposure also plays a large role. It was once believed that the placenta protected baby from any harmful chemicals, however we’ve known for a long time now that many dangerous chemicals are transplacental.

Unfortunately, chemicals are highly under-regulated in the United States. New ones are put on store shelves each year, and they do not have to be proven safe before they are made available to the public. Many people make the argument that the potentially toxic ingredient in any one product is too small to make a difference but they fail to mention that women use, on average, 12 products per day. Additionally, developing babies are at their most vulnerable and are more likely to be impacted by small amounts of chemicals than adults. There have been countless studies that show the negative impacts chemicals and toxins in many products can cause, thus why I believe it is of utmost importance that pregnant mamas and babies use safe, natural products.

NN: Tell us how each bundle works and what subscribers can expect in each box?

Generally, during pregnancy months, our bundles are all about replacing every day products that often contain toxins with natural alternatives. One month might be all about replacing your shower items, another is all about replacing bathroom items and another is replacing makeup. Even if mamas are already using natural products, this is a good way to be introduced to a new brand or product that perhaps they haven’t heard of. We also add time sensitive items to help with nausea, heartburn, the itch of stretching skin, etc. We typically include 3-5 full size products, coupons, and a mix of travel size and sample products in each bundle. The retail value of each bundle is always over $40 and sometimes significantly over that. Free shipping too!

NN: As expert curators in all things natural and family, tell us what a typical bundle would include for a women in her second or third trimester?

We send monthly bundles tailored to a mother’s stage of pregnancy or the first year of their baby’s life. As mentioned above, the pregnancy months are primarily all about replacing everyday products that often contain toxins with natural alternatives and to introduce mamas to awesome, respectable brands and products. Below are a couple example bundles:

Month 4 of pregnancy: Lotions and oils to soothe dry, itchy skin

  • Foot Cream
  • Facial Moisturizer
  • Eye Cream
  • Heartburn Tea
  • Toning Oil
  • Belly Balm

Month 9 of pregnancy: Products to prep for the baby

  • Birth and Baby Oil
  • Post Partum Bath Herbs
  • Mama Bottom Spray
  • Dish soap
  • Diaper Cream
  • Rhoid Balm
  • Nipple Butter

NN: What advice would you give to women that find it overwhelming to switch to natural products?

When you first start to look into the chemicals that are in everyday products and that are so prevalent in our environments, you may feel overwhelmed and hopeless. I’ve heard “Why bother?” too often for my liking. I get it, but I’d like to urge and beg of anyone feeling that way to not become desensitized. We are in the midst of very exciting times and lots of change in regards to the way chemicals are regulated in the United States. Reputable, responsible brands like Nine Naturals are making it easier for mamas to make healthy choices. We are delighted to include Nine Naturals products in our bundles!

NN: What is your favorite Nine Naturals Product?

It’s hard to choose just one, but I’m going to go with the Citrus and Mint Nourishing Conditioner. It’s lightweight, which is great for use everyday. And it definitely helps to smooth and add shine. Also important to mention- it smells great and the citrus and mint scent helps to relieve nausea so we know our mamas will love using the samples they receive in their bundles!

Use the promo code NINENATURALS to receive 25% off your first month-to-month bundle- a little gift from the 21Bundles Family to you, in celebration of this beautiful line of personal-care products.

21BundlesJacqueline Cerone Cardamone wears many hats, including but not limited to caregiver, yoga teacher, CLEC, postpartum doula, aspiring Doctor of Naturopathy, and a founder of 21Bundles, Inc. She lives in San Francisco with her husband Michael, who alongside a childhood friend, JD, is also a co-founder of 21Bundles.

21Bundles delivers monthly bundles of natural products to pregnant and new moms, tailored to their stage of pregnancy or their baby’s age. 9 months of pregnancy + the first 12 months of baby’s life = 21Bundles. Order at any time in that time frame and 21Bundles will tailor a bundle for you!

Nine Naturals Lip Balm Body Balm

We’ve been keeping a secret from you that we can finally share! The Nine Naturals team has been using our NEW Simply Natural Lip Balm & Repairing Body Balm for months and we are absolutely in love with these versatile products. We use them for everything.

Here are our 9 favorite uses for the Simply Natural Lip Balm & Repairing Body Balm:

1) Soothe Sunburn: Sometimes even careful sun protection practices can sometimes fail to completely prevent sunburns, especially if you have fair or sensitive skin. The Nine Naturals Repairing Body Balm, made with moisturizing butters and soothing calendula extract, can help heal and protect sun damaged skin.

2) Make Natural Make-Up: Mix a little bit of Simply Natural Lip Balm with your all-natural powder blush or eye shadows to make long lasting cream-versions of your favorite makeup products. Bonus: Depending on the color, these new creams can also double as tinted lip balm!

3) Cure Dry Cuticles: Dry cuticles are a season-less issue for us. We love the stick feature of the Repairing Body Balm to use on our cuticles without making our fingers a greasy mess!

4) Soothe Your Achy Nose During Allergy Season: Are allergies causing you to constantly blow your nose and irritate your skin? Soothe the chapped, irritated skin around your nose by dabbing some Repairing Body Balm to relieve the pain of red, tender skin.

5) Heal Dry, Cracked Heels: You don’t hear many women talking about it even though dry, cracked heels are a common symptom of pregnancy! Mongongo oil, the main ingredient in the Repairing Body Balm, has been used for centuries to help heal and moisturize skin. Apply the balm to your feet morning and night to help protect the skin and restore moisture.

6) Control Flyaways: We love using Nine Naturals Mandarin + Ginger Restorative Conditioner to tame flyaways in the morning. However, if you are battling frizz and static hair when out and about, just rub a little bit of Simply Natural Lip Balm on your palms or finger tips and comb through your hair. It’ll smooth out your tresses immediately!

7) Smooth Brows: Use the Simply Naturals Lip Balm to shape your brows in the morning. No need for a special brow gel with this trick - it saves both money and precious space in your make-up bag.

8) Comfort Skin After Shaving Nicks: Next time you cut yourself shaving, ditch the piece of toilet paper for a clear coat of Repairing Body Balm instead.

9) Ease In To New Shoes: Wearing a fabulous new pair of shoes is fun, but breaking in those new heels can be downright painful. Protect the back of your feet and help prevent blisters by using the Repairing Body Balm to reduce the friction from new shoes when not wearing hose or socks.

Planning for the Unexpected: All You Need To Know About Trusts

Trust

Article is courtesy of Everplans.com

If there is one thing that almost all parents and parents-to-be have in common is that they are always planning and preparing for the next step - but what happens when the unexpected happens? That is why Nine Naturals is excited to partner with Everplans in the Planning For The Unexpected Series to help bring you helpful tips and information for everything from financial and medical planning to spiritual and grief counseling.

Set up trusts to minimize estate taxes, avoid probate, and seamlessly transfer your assets to your heirs.
Simply put: A trust is a legal arrangement in which a certain amount of property or assets is held by a person or entity (e.g. bank) for the benefit of one or more other people.

Why Would You Create One?

  • To maintain control of assets in the event of incompetence (if you become unable to manage your assets due to a decline in health or mental fitness)
  • To save on estate taxes
  • To avoid probate
  • When significant amounts of assets are involved, trusts may also be established to maintain control over assets even after the original owner has died. For example, a trust may be set up with the sole purpose of paying college tuition for a grandchild. In this scenario, the money in the trust cannot be used for any purpose other than paying college tuition and cannot be used on behalf of anyone other than the grandchild.
  • Determine the Type of Trust That You Need

Trusts can accomplish a range of goals, including avoiding probate, minimizing estate taxes, and making sure your heirs receive as much of your money as possible as quickly as possible. The type of trust you set up will depend on what your goals are.

Do It Online Or With an Attorney

There are many online legal services that can help you create a trust. Since trusts are incredibly complicated, you may want to consider working with a trust and estate attorney. In addition, there are online services that offer personalized online legal advice from an attorney, which can be a more affordable option.

Online: Factors to take into consideration when choosing an online legal service include cost, completion and delivery time, and the services offered by the site. For example, some online legal services will submit your documents to review by a paralegal after completion, while others will not.

Attorney: The right trust and estate attorney will be someone with significant experience in handling the issues you’re dealing with. Talk to friends, family members, and other attorneys to get recommendations. Meet with the attorney you’re considering before hiring him or her.

The Four Main Participants In a Trust

Grantor: the person who creates the trust (also known as “donor,” “settlor,” or “trustor”)

Trustee: the person, people, or entity (such as a bank) that agrees to hold the property or assets (the grantor may be the trustee)

Principal: the property or assets themselves, including money, which is held in the trust and managed by the trustee

Beneficiary: the person or people who ultimately receive the property or assets in the trust

The Main Types of Trusts

There are many different types of trusts, and depending on the type of assets you’re trying to protect or the your goals in setting up a trust, there may be some trusts that will better meet your needs than others.

Living Trusts

When a trust is created and then immediately become effective, it is known as a “living trust.” [Dig Deeper: Living Trusts]

Testamentary Trusts

When a trust is created and then does not become effective until after your death, it is known as a “testamentary trust.” In the case of testamentary trusts, you, as the person creating the trust, are called the “testator.” Testamentary trusts are often created within wills.

How Do You Fund It?

Testamentary trusts are generally funded only after your death, and are often funded with the assets of the your estate. In order to fund a testamentary trust, language in the will must explicitly state that all estate assets should be moved into the trust upon your death. The estate assets can then be distributed and managed according to the terms of the trust. [Dig Deeper: Testamentary Trusts]

Living Trusts vs. Testamentary Trusts

All trusts are set up by you, the grantor, during your life. However, not all trusts immediately go into effect. Depending on when the trust becomes effective, it is either a living trust or a testamentary trust.

Revocable Trusts

You retain ownership and control of the property in the trust and can change the terms of the trust, including the trustees and beneficiaries.

How Do You Fund It?

If you are setting up a revocable trust, you will likely be the sole trustee of your trust. As the sole trustee, you can move assets into the trust and out of the trust at will, without too much hassle. Because of this, many people with revocable living trusts put a large portion of their assets to be held in trust, including real estate, financial accounts (stocks, bonds, etc.), and even bank accounts, such as a savings account. [Dig Deeper: Revocable Trusts]

Irrevocable Trusts

You give ownership and control of the property in the trust to others (trustees) and therefore no longer own or control the property, thus making you unable to enact changes to the the trust.

How Do You Fund It?

By putting assets into an irrevocable trust, you are essentially giving up ownership and control of those assets, so choose these assets carefully. Which assets will be used to fund an irrevocable living trust are generally determined by the goals of the trust. Choosing a funding method that supports the goals of the trust is something that you should decide with the help of a trust and estates attorney. Transferring property to an irrevocable living trust also requires that a formal transfer or property be completed, meaning that the property must be re-titled in the trustee’s name. An attorney can help you complete and manage a re-titling of property. [Dig Deeper: Irrevocable Trusts]

Fun Fact (that’s not really all that fun): All trusts are either revocable or irrevocable.

An Even Funner Tip: Living trusts trusts must be funded during your lifetime; testamentary trusts are funded after your death.

Reasons For Choosing a Revocable Trust vs. an Irrevocable Trust

Depending on the goals of the trust that you’re establishing, there may be some benefits to creating either a revocable trust or an irrevocable trust. For example, if the primary goal of the trust is to avoid excessive estate taxes, you will likely want to set up an irrevocable trust, as you would not pay taxes on property held in an irrevocable trust. However, if the primary goal of the trust is to maintain control of assets in the event of incompetence, you will likely want to set up a revocable trust, as you will retain control over the assets in the trust and the beneficiaries of that trust until you die. In addition, the rules of the particular trust that you’re establishing may dictate whether a trust must be revocable or irrevocable. If you’re unsure whether you want to establish a revocable or irrevocable trust, you should consult a licensed trusts and estates attorney in your state.

How Do You Create One?

Setting up trusts can be done online or with the help of a trust and estate attorney.

Understanding the Laws

There are many state and federal laws that must be carefully followed when setting up a trust. While some states will allow you to set up a trust on your own or set up a trust using an online legal service, other states require that an attorney work with you to establish a trust. Even in states where residents are able to establish trusts on their own or online, it’s always a good idea to consult with an attorney before finalizing the documents.

Setting Up Trusts Online

Many legal websites offer tools for setting up trusts online. The trusts you can set up online are generally simple trusts that achieve the basic goals of naming trustees and beneficiaries. If you choose to set up a trust online, you should consult a trust and estate attorney before finalizing any trust documents. Whether you go directly to an attorney or use an online service that offers the ability to get advice from real attorneys, having a lawyer look over your documents can help you make sure that they’re legally binding, and that they achieve all your legal goals.

Trust Cost

The cost of establishing a trust can vary based on the type and complexity of the trust, and the method of establishment. Online legal services can charge anywhere from $30-$300 to set up a trust, while consulting with a lawyer can cost anywhere from $1000-$3000, generally. While the cost of consulting with a lawyer may seem very high, a lawyer can make sure that the trust you’re setting up is completely valid and legally sound, which can potentially save you or your heirs money later.

Tax Implications During Your Life

With a revocable trust you are still treated as the owner of the property in the trust, and can therefore be taxed on that property during your life. With an irrevocable trust, you give up ownership of the property in the trust and are therefore no longer liable for that property and cannot be taxed on that property.

All You Need To Know About Trustees

Trustees are responsible for managing, investing, and distributing the property in the trust. This includes administration and accounting, paying any taxes on behalf of the trust, working with beneficiaries to determine their goals for the trust, and working fairly and with transparency around issues of management, investments, and distributions.

Managing Trust Assets

The trustee is responsible for the accounting and administration of the trust. This includes preparing and filing income tax returns for the trust, paying those income taxes from the trust, and adhering to any and all applicable state and federal laws around trust administration. The trustee must also keep accurate records of all trust-related transactions.

Investing Trust Assets

The trustee is responsible for investing the trust assets so that those assets earn income for the beneficiaries. Depending on the needs of the beneficiaries, the trustee is responsible for determining whether to invest the principal to earn income, to grow the principal in the trust, or other goals that the beneficiaries might have.

Distributing Trust Assets

The trustee must follow the instructions of the trust in distributing income or property to the trust’s beneficiaries. The trustee must make these distributions in a timely and responsible manner.

Who Can Serve as a Trustee?

The trustees of your trust can be yourself, your family members or friends, professionals (accountants, attorneys, etc.), a bank or a trust company, or any combination of these people. [Dig Deeper: Duties of a Trustee]

Successor Trustees

If you are naming only a single trustee, you will want to be sure to name at least one successor trustee. In case the primary trustee that you name is not able to serve as trustee for any reason, the successor trustee can serve. If you are the sole trustee you’ll also want to name a successor trustee so that the trust can continue to be managed after your death.

If you’re establishing a revocable living trust, you will likely name yourself as the sole trustee.

How to Choose Trustees

These are the qualities you want in your trustee…

  • Attention to detail
  • An understanding of his or her duties, and a commitment to taking those duties seriously
  • An understanding of finances and perhaps investing, accounting, or law
  • Good communication skills
  • Aligned with your morals and values
  • When choosing trustees, it’s important to think about the structure and goals of the trust and the specific requirements of the trustees of that trust. While some trusts may require trustees with extensive experience in investing or accounting, other trusts may benefit from trustees who have close personal relationships with the beneficiaries or the grantor.

In some cases, the person best suited to be a trustee may not be your closest friend or family member, but instead may be a friend or colleague who you believe to be competent, honest, and intelligent. You may also appoint someone close to you to act as a trustee and specify to that person that you would like him or her to hire professionals to advise on certain aspects of the process.

Appointing a Professional as a Trustee

If you don’t feel like you have anyone in your personal life who you would like to entrust with the role of trustee, you may appoint a professional that you have a relationship with, such as an attorney or an accountant. These people may require a fee for their services as a trustee.

The End Result: Beneficiaries

Beneficiaries of a trust are the people or organization(s) who are named as the recipients of any benefits of the trust. The beneficiaries can be anyone you like, but will usually depend on the goals of the trust.

Choosing Beneficiaries of a Trust

If you’re setting up a trust that is intended to avoid probate and seamlessly transfer assets to your family, you’ll likely want to name your family members as the beneficiaries. If you’re setting up a trust that is intended to hold assets for your grandchildren, will likely name those grandchildren as the beneficiaries. A trust that is intended to provide support for a charitable organization will likely name the charity as the beneficiary.

Beneficiary Distributions

Based on the goals of your trust and the number of beneficiaries you name, you can decide how you would like those beneficiaries to receive distributions. For example, if you have three children you may name all three of your children as equal beneficiaries or you may name them as unequal beneficiaries, with each child receiving different distributions from the trust.

Descendants

You may also decide whether or not the beneficiary designation applies to linear descendants—that is, whether or not your children’s children would become beneficiaries in the event that one of your children should die before the assets in the trust are fully depleted.
