At Nine Naturals, we’re on a mission to make beauty simple, smart and safe for moms and moms-to-be. Integral to that is understanding our ingredients’ science and benefits. Today’s Nine Naturals Ingredient Story, featuring Aloe Leaf Extract, is part of an ongoing series featuring the natural, plant-based ingredients behind our high performance beauty products.
Aloe Barbadensis Leaf Extract (Aloe), is best known for its use as a topical treatment, but its healing powers go far beyond its popular role as a medicinal ointment. With its cactus-like spikes, the aloe plant may look fierce, but the gel found on the inside is gentle and revitalizing. Aloe extract boasts a long history as a multipurpose remedy, as far back as 2000 BC Mesopotamia. Aloe is commonly used worldwide and across cultures, with roots that trace back to ancient times. Legend has it that Cleopatra fondly used aloe leaf extract to keep her skin smooth and soft.
The Aloe Plant
Aloe Barbadensis Leaf Extract comes from the green leaves of the aloe plant. The genus of aloe contains approximately 500 plants, and “true aloe,” or aloe vera, is the most well-known and cultivated. The succulent plant is often grown ornamentally, but many keep aloe plants for their verdant beauty as well as their at-home healing properties. Aloe leaf extract is a breeze to remove from the plant. Simply clip one of its leaves and gently squeeze out the gel. Aloe leaves grow from the inside, creating a layered effect. When clipping, choose the leaves on the very outside of the plant to harvest, as these are the most mature. The gel can be applied to the skin, straight from the frond. If your hectic mother-to-be schedule keeps you up and running, you can also save gel from an aloe plant for future use in an airtight container for up to one week at room temperature, or slightly cooler.
The Science of Aloe Leaf Extract
Aloe Leaf Extract consists primary of water - in fact, 99% water. But the other 1% is where the powerhouse healing properties reside. The transparent gel is made up of many active components, including necessary vitamins, minerals, sugars, enzymes, lignins, amino acids, anthraquinones, saponins, fatty acids, and salicylic acid. All of these components work to make aloe a highly restorative extract, with each ingredient performing different functions. For example, glycoproteins speed the healing process by stopping pain. Polysaccharides stimulate skin growth and repair. Amino acids and uronic acids detox cells. Fatty acids are anti-inflammatory. Aloe leaf extract has many uses for personal care.
Aloe Leaf Extract’s Benefits for Skin and Hair Care
For mild burns and abrasions, aloe leaf extract is one the most-used natural remedies. But, the gel has so many other benefits beyond the healing variety. Aloe contains aloin, which can help protect skin from UV damage. It’s extensive array of vitamins - including A, B1, B2, B3, B5, B6, B12, C, E, choline and folic acid - rejuvenates aged tissue, purifies pores, and promotes healthy skin. Aloe gel also acts as a moisturizing agent, restoring suppleness to the skin. With an ever-changing pregnant body, retaining moisture and elasticity is key, and aloe leaf extract will help your skin feeling soft and smooth. Aloe leaf extract can also be used directly on the skin as a shave gel or a makeup remover.
Why Nine Naturals Loves Aloe Leaf Extract
Pregnancy is a time when we moms-to-be need all the self-care we can get, which is why we love using the ultra-soothing aloe leaf extract in our products. A tote, satchel or clutch may be your handbag of choice now, but once your baby arrives those fashionable beauties will be tossed aside in favor of the mini van of handbags – the diaper bag. If packed correctly, your diaper bag will rival Mary Poppins’ carpetbag, due to its contents ability to fill an empty belly, soothe a fussy baby to sleep, and treat ailments of any size.
Selecting the right diaper bag is important, so keep the following in mind when registering or shopping for your go-to bag:
- It must have enough space to hold all essential items
- It should be compartmentalized so that feeding supplies can be kept separate from medicines and skincare products
- It should require no more than a simple wipe down to clean and
- It should be made of flexible material so that it can be tossed, tucked or thrown into the smallest of spaces. A few of our favorite diaper bag brands are Diaper Dude, Skip Hop and Lock & Key Leathers.
Diaper bag essentials may vary if you’re a soon-to-be mom of multiples, or if baby will join a big brother and/or sister upon arrival; however, the following staples are the same for every parent:
- Diapers: If using cloth diapers, be sure to pack a wet bag or plastic bag to store used diapers
- Baby wipes: For bums, hands, faces and everything else that needs a good cleaning
- Diaper cream/ointment
- Nursing shawl/blanket for breastfed babies
- Infant formula and bottles for formula fed babies
- Burp cloth
- Bottle (or cup) of water
- Hat: A wide brim hat for spring/summer and a fitted cap for fall/winter
- Nine Naturals Natural SPF 32 Sunscreen:Sunscreen should be used all year round on the whole family. Natural Suncreen SPF 32 is safe for mom, baby & the whole family.
- Teething toys: Not needed right away, but come in handy for entertaining
- Small books and toys
- Blanket: To cover your baby if (s)he falls asleep (can also be used during breastfeeding to eliminate the need for a nursing shawl)
- Nine Naturals Repairing Body Balm: Great for adding moisture to chapped lips and skin
- Snack: Pack a KIND bar or Mamma Chia pouch in case you don’t get a chance to eat a full meal when out and about
- Extra set of clothes for baby
Your diaper bag is only helpful to you if you keep it stocked with the necessities. So, at the end of every day, replace the amount of used diapers with the same number of fresh ones, swap out a dirty outfit with a clean one, and wash any toys/pacifiers/teethers that were dropped and/or placed on grimy surfaces.

At Nine Naturals, we’re on a mission to make beauty simple, smart and safe for moms and moms-to-be. Integral to that is understanding our ingredients’ science and benefits. Today’s Nine Naturals Ingredient Story, featuring Grapeseed Oil, is part of an ongoing series featuring the natural, plant-based ingredients behind our high performance beauty products.
Vitis Vinifera, also known as the common grape vine, is successfully grown in various climates around the world, including the U.S., France, and South Africa. Grapes, which are the largest fruit crop on the planet, have a powerhouse oil within their seeds that is revealed as a byproduct in the wine-making process. While it can be used in food preparation (as a cooking oil or salad dressing base), grapeseed oil can be directly applied to the skin to treat acne, scars, and wrinkles.
The Science and Extraction of Grapeseed Oil
Extracting oil from the diminutive seed is both a time consuming and time sensitive process. To ensure the highest quality (and taste, if being consumed), grapeseed oil must be produced within 48 hours of the grapes removal from the vine, so as to avoid the commencement of the fermentation process. To yield grapeseed oil, the grape seeds are separated from the stems and skins of the grapes and then mechanically processed through a machine (expeller press) where high pressure is applied to release the liquid treasure. Grapeseed oil, which has risen in popularity since the 1990s, contains four fatty acids—linoleic (70.6%), oleic (16.2%), palmitic (7.2%), and stearic (4.4%)—in addition to vitamins C, E, and D.
Grapeseed Oil’s Benefits for Skin and Hair Care
Grape seed oil is non-comedogenic, non-greasy, and easily absorbed, making it a suitable moisturizer for all skin types and ages. Thanks to its anti-inflammatory properties and astringent properties, grapeseed oil attacks acne and residual scarring to leave your skin brightened and more balanced. Additionally, because it contains more linoleic acid than any other carrier oil, continued usage of grape seed oil will result in the restoration of firmness to your skin, thus reducing the look of fine lines.
When massaged into the scalp, or applied as a hot oil treatment (either on its own or combined with other oils), grape seed oil can strengthen your locks and encourage new hair growth.

- 9 Tips For A Naturally Beautiful Pregnancy: Tips From Our Founder
Pregnancy glow is not as magical as it sounds. As Rachel Greenberg from TODAY Style says, “not everyone is blessed with this prenatal perk” as she described the skin ailments she faced. In her list of the 15 beauty products she recommends to create your pregnancy glow, she included our very own Nine Naturals’ Simply Natural Lip Balm.
This was what she had to say about our lip balm: “Trust was essential for a product that I used multiple times a day, and I felt totally comfortable with this pregnancy beauty brand’s natural lip balm.”
Thanks Rachel and TODAY Style – glad to hear you loved our lip balm! Head over to TODAY Style to see her other recommendations to achieve your own natural, dewy pregnancy look.
We are so excited to introduce Trust Fund Beauty as our first curated addition to The Covet Shop. We sat down with the founder of TFB, Samara Granofsky and learned what inspired her to create a high-quality line of fun nail polishes that are safe for you and those you love. With Trust Fund Beauty, you can look fabulous without compromising your health.
1) What inspired you to start TFB?
My mother was going through chemotherapy and wanted a safe, non-toxic nail polish. The non-toxic nail polishes she found had limited colors and weren’t fun or didn’t have cool names. Inspired by my mother, years later I put her want and our joint sense of humor into creating Trust Fund Beauty, a luxury line of high-end, collection-themed, toxin free polishes.
2) We (and I’m sure other women as well!) love the playful nature of the names of your polishes. What inspired these names?
The names were inspired by my life and the pop culture we all live in. Every name has a meaning behind it – for example, the story behind the Rich Bitch nail polish is “Self-explanatory. You get what you want, because you can. And you do it with style.”
3) What are the chemicals you want to avoid in nail polishes? Why are they harmful?
We formulate our nail polishes in accordance to FDA regulations and David Sazuki Foundation guidelines, in order to eliminate the chemicals that are deemed toxic while still producing a quick drying, durable and long wearing polish (thank you science!).
4) Tell us more about TFB formulations. What makes them unique to other brands?
Our nail polishes are actually 7-free (meaning free of parabens, dibutyl phthalate, toluene, xylene, camphor, formaldehyde and resin - editor's note: TFB is now 10-free!), but we do not use it in our marketing because the term hasn’t caught on just yet. The polishes are still quick drying, long wearing and super pigmented. It just goes to show that you don’t need chemicals to have a great product!
The polishes are also cruelty free to both humans and animals (no part of our product is made in a country with questionable human rights records or labor laws).
5) What’s your favorite/go-to TFB nail color?
It depends on my mood, but I love Rich Bitch. For me, it’s the perfect red! And sometimes I break a nail and have to file the rest down short to match and it also looks good on both long and short nails.
As a lover of the finest things life has to offer, Samara Granofsky created Trust Fund Beauty out of a desire to bring out the rich bitch in everyone. A skilled shopper who never denies herself the pleasure of “one in every colour”, Samara is a self-proclaimed polish addict so the idea to start a 7-free luxury line of high-end, collection-themed polishes was a no-brainer!
