We are so excited that Nine Naturals has made a presence in Los Angeles – Beverly Hills, to be exact – at the gorgeous new nail salon, Olive & June! We sat down this week with Sarah Gibson Tuttle, founder of Olive & June, who founded the nail salon on the idea that getting a manicure and pedicure should be downright lovely.
NN: What inspired you to open your own salon?
SGT: I worked in finance for years in NYC and was looking for a change of scenery. After visiting friends out west, I fell in love with LA (not hard to do!). While I was job hunting and interviewing for gigs that would allow me to move, I must have tried 50 different nail salons. No one had a favorite — every recommendation I got people would say “Well, I go to this place but they are just OK.” One day a light bulb went off and I realized that the only way to have a spot that my friends and I loved going to was to create it.
NN: Olive & June is such a great, unique name – what is the story behind it?
SGT: I named it after my grandmother and great grandmother, who are both amazing, strong women who I respect immensely. This was such a perfect way to honor them.
NN: Olive & June offers a nail treatment called “The Emma” – tailored for the expectant mother’s beauty needs. What inspired you to offer treatments that aren’t normally found in nail salons?
SGT: Most salons offer what they want to provide, without thinking of the menu from the vantage point of the client. Given my background as a client, I set the menu up for all the services that I, or my friends and family, would want.
NN: Do you feel there is a lack of spa services for women that want the all natural experience or the organic experience?
SGT: Absolutely and especially being offered by one salon. You can go to many salons that offer only all natural or organic but most won’t offer you both organic and gels. Women have different needs and wants, and it’s great for one salon to try to cater to as many people as possible. That’s our goal.
NN: What are your top tips for maintaining healthy nails, during and beyond pregnancy?
SGT: The best product on the market is cuticle oil. There are brands for varying degrees of organic and non toxic – but everyone, and especially pregnant mothers, should be using cuticle oil to keep their nails strong and healthy. I would also recommend a no polish mani or one with the cleaner polishes.
NN: Let’s talk nail polish! What are some of your favorite pregnancy safe nail polish brands right now?
SGT: I love RGB, Mint & Kure Bazaar! All three are cleaner polishes (RGB & Mint are 5 free, Kure Bazaar is up to 85pct organic) and they have amazing colors. I stay away from the water based polishes because their performance is just not up to par w the rest and all that does is frustrate our clients.
NN: What nail trends are you seeing this season (color/art work etc)?
SGT: Tons of nail art! Everyone is getting excited about nail art – whether that be a french mani with a different color tip or a cute hand drawn heart or fun design, or a full set of designs on every nail! We are seeing a ton of very dark polishes – clients are loving Sea by RGB which is a very dark green w a shimmer. We are also seeing a ton of clients loving nude well past summer.
NN: What is your favorite Nine Naturals product?
SGT: I love the Belly Butter…It is a great lotion and it smells amazing!
